DEAR DIDI,

My teacher that I had for two years in a row always mixed me up with this other Indian girl in my section. We were the only brown people in the class. We had completely different appearances from our clothes, to our hair, to our facial features, to our height. It was so frustrating that she didn't care enough to call us by our right names, yet somehow remembered to call the white kids by their NICKNAMES, even though there were more white people in the class than brown. She did this for two years and didn't even try to pronounce my name correctly. It felt like she didn't care about getting to know me at all.

Hey! I am so sorry to hear this. Believe me, you are not alone in feeling this way. And it can be TOTALLY frustrating. However, there is ALWAYS a way to make an unfortunate situation better. If you are comfortable talking to this teacher or any future teacher who makes this same mistake, you’ll find it can be really helpful. They usually don’t mean any harm and it is a mistake that they probably don’t even realize they are making. By engaging in a conversation with them, you can explain the significance behind your name and other South Asian names and the importance of being called by the correct name. You can educate your teacher and create a more positive environment for yourself as well as future brown students they might have. It’s little steps like this that can make a big change.

Love always,

Didi
