DEAR DIDI,

It was a normal day in history class when we began talking about 9/11. One of my classmates said, "When I see people with head coverings, it scares me." The teacher and students say nothing and simply just move on. My grandfather wears a turban and I now feel uncomfortable bringing him to campus.

Hey, I’m so sorry that you had to experience such an insensitive comment like that. A lot of the time, people fear what they don’t know. Starting a conversation with your peer or even approaching your teacher and letting them know about the significance of South Asian headwear might be a good place to begin. You will simultaneously enable them to inform their future family, friends, classmates, and students on the topic. You never know, after learning more about it, they may fear it no longer.

Love always,

Didi
